Back in IIM Lucknow, one of our professors - Payal Mehra mam spoke about different human psychological types based on how they perceive themselves and others around them. I have reproduced the chart that she explained in the picture below. It is a version of transactional analysis by Eric Berne.
I+ means "I am good", I- means "I am not good". Likewise, U+ means "You are good" and U- means "You are not good". It should be noted that these personality types may be temporary and change based on times, people, circumstances, etc. However, the underlying tendency is longer lasting than the transient state. Without delving into details about each personality type, I will elaborate on what I am trying to create.
I+U+
I+U+ means I am good and you are also good. Such people are appreciative of others and have healthy self-respect at the same time. They stay positive most of the time.
This is the type of culture that I have tried to create at Finwisor.
- This allows us to have multiple leaders at different levels of the organization without friction
- Positive people are also more creative and are able to better utilize their potential
- Such personalities make working a blissful experience
- The personality also shows in the experience that clients have with us. By default, clients are treated well and they feel confident about us.
Why not I-U+?
I am not good, but you are good. People with such mindsets turn out to be good followers. This would also promote discipline in the organization.
This is not what I intend to promote though. In my opinion, these personality types follow orders but don't do too well for themselves which will eventually show in their work output. Such personalities would also lead to a "Yes boss" culture with higher politics.
How do we promote I+U+ culture
Appreciating others views and opinions
Each one of us is unique and there are bound to be times when there will be differences of opinions. However, a difference of opinion should not snowball into arguments that end with bitterness. Different points of view can co-exist. The Jain principle of "Anekant" beautifully lays an ideal that promotes a healthy work culture.
Authority and responsibility
Each person is empowered to carry out the work in his or her own way. Others act as guiding and motivational forces to help.
Mutual Admiration Sessions
This is a very powerful exercise where we all sit together and create an atmosphere of appreciation, love, and respect for each other by genuinely praising others' strengths.
Satsangs
We intend to start having satsangs to promote being spiritual at work. Spirituality is about keeping the underlying intentions clean while working. Spirituality helps in having unconditional love for all which leads to I+U+. Frankly, spirituality transcends even this to reach a completely non-judgemental state. That state is still far for us, but the process is going to start soon.
